Are Dental Implants Right for Me?
If you are missing one or more of your teeth, it’s a good idea to talk to your dentist to discuss your treatment options. Even just one missing tooth can cause the remaining teeth to shift out of alignment causing even more issues. It is generally recommended that patients consider dental implants to restore lost teeth as an alternative to bridges, partials or complete dentures. Here is a look at why.
First, what are dental implants? A dental implant is an artificial root made of titanium metal and inserted into the jawbone to replace the root of the natural tooth. An artificial replacement tooth is attached to the implant. The implant acts as an anchor to hold the replacement tooth in place. These implants are very strong, stable and durable and will last many years, but on occasion may have to be tightened or replaced due to normal wear and tear.
Can anyone get dental implants? Patients who are generally in good health, have healthy gums and enough bone in the jaw to hold an implant are good candidates for implants. If your jawbone has shrunk you may be able to have a bone graft to add new bone to your jawbone. Your Dentist will determine if bone grafting is right for you.
How are dental implants done? Once it’s been decided that dental implants are the right treatment for you, your dentist will schedule an appointment to prep your jawbone for surgery, this may include some measure of bone grafting. Once the jawbone heals, the implant is inserted into the gum line. The jaw is given time to heal again, and then the dentist will place the abutment (the piece that screws into the implant) and attach the artificial tooth on top, completing the full implant. This process could take several months to complete as you need time between appointments for your jaw to heal.
After Surgery Discomfort is natural and normal after dental implant surgery. You can expect swelling of the face and gums, bruising of the face, pain at the site of your surgery or minor bleeding. Your dentist may recommend a soft food diet, ice packs and patience while you heal.
